Here are some of the many reasons why you should own a snake!

Compared to most other species of pets, snakes can be the best all around pet. After comparing some of the benefits and disadvantages to owning snakes versus other animals, it is easy to see what makes snake ownership so great!

Most common pets are dogs and cats. These are considered to be the most socially acceptable pets, but this doesn't make them the best.

Other common pets included various birds, fish, exotic mammals, various lizards, and more.

Compared to all of these other types of pets, snakes have their own appeal.

The most interesting thing about snake ownership, is watching them eat!webassets/100_3472.JPG Nothing else in the world eats like a snake. This is fascinating to watch, even after years of witnessing these creatures consume whole prey, without chewing, and without using hands or claws. Feeding most other animals is nothing special, and is even considered a usual chore, burden, and responsibility. Feeding snakes is fun. Your friends and family will enjoy watching!

Caging and maintaining is convenient. Snakes are easily compared to fish. They don't take up much space, and are perfect for smaller houses, or areas where space is limited. While comparing snakes to fish, it is important to note that a snake's cage is much easier to clean than a fish aquarium. The same advantages are having a decorative and colorful pet that requires little space or attention, and does not make noise. A snake can be picked up and held and enjoyed! Snakes are more fun to feed, and don't need to be fed as often. Snakes live much longer than fish. Snakes can be enjoyed in public and taken out doors. A well managed snake won't get ran over by traffic or run to the neighbor's house. Most snakes are very slow when on the go. Snakes are great in this respect.

Shedding does occur, but not like it does with many other animals. Cats, dogs, and many other animals may shed all over the house! A snake only sheds in it's cage, and this is very easy to clean, since a properly shed snake may only shed once a month in one solid piece of skin. Even birds discard feathers every day.

Lizards have claws, and some even have a tendency to whip at you with their tales. Snakes don't have claws to scratch you or your furniture with. Snakes have tails, but they can't hurt you with their tails. A snake's tail is often used to hold on to your hand for security.

Dogs and cats cuddle, but so can a snake. Many snakes are perfectly content to crawl on your lap, or even to sit quietly on your leg as you watch TV. Birds will fly away, and lizards will usually not sit still. Birds often poo several times an hour, even while sitting on you.

Snakes rarely poo. Snakes evacuate their bowels about once every 2 weeks, or once monthly, depending on how often they are fed. They urinate a bit more often. If in the cage, this can easily be cleaned, and absorbed by news papers and paper towels with very little trouble, and often without odor, depending on the species and it's health. It isn't like house training a dog or cat which can be frustrating. Even cats and dogs have accidents, but their accidents are usually much larger and have more odor. Cats have litter boxes, and dogs may go out side, but can track mud into the house after they are done.

Snakes don't make much noise at all.  They often sit still and motionless. Dogs will regularly bark, wine, and growl, while cats meow, and birds chirp and scream. For piece and quiet, snakes are definitely a safe bet.

Snakes also don't have an odor. Dogs will need to be bathed on a regular basis and some cats also. Snakes enjoy a dip in the water, but this is not required.

What about a pet sitter when you go on vacation? Snakes don't need them. Just make sure that your snake has plenty of water before you go on your trip, and the snake will be fine. It won't chew your shoes, or mess in the floor. It will be there when you get back.

Even I have to admit that a snake could bite, but if properly held and conditioned to being held, being bitten is a rare occurance. Besides, have you not ever been bitten by a dog or bird, or scratched and bitten by a cat? The fact is that almost all pets can bite, or scratch, or cause harm in some way. Snakes are no exception, but rarely bite, and are usually easily tamed. If bitten, very few bites cause any serious damage, and most bites are similar to simple scratches. Most pet snakes aren't poisonous. They are harmless, and infection from a bite rarely occurs if the bite is simply washed with regular soap.

If you want a pet that doesn't make much noise and doesn't need much space or attention, then get a snake. If you want a pet that people find attractive and interesting, then get a snake. If you want a pet that doesn't destroy your home, and doesn't eat or poo several times a day, get a snake. If you want a pet that you can hold and pet, cuddle and enjoy, and travel with, then buy a snake.
